TANZANIA - ZANZIBAR BARAZA
ZANZIBAR BARAZA
“In Zanzibar culture, the Baraza or bench has for centuries been a focal point of community life. Benches run around verandas outside traditional Swahili homes or flank the heavy doors of Arab-style Town houses.
The long, narrow streets of Stone Town have Baraza benches built on each side instead of pavements, while in villages a palm leaf shelter, flanked by wooden seats fulfills the same function. Baraza evolved as a way to receive and entertain visitors. Coffee and sweetmeats would be served on the
Baraza to anyone who arrived.
The Omani Sultans held public meetings, also known as Baraza, to receive petitioners or give visiting dignitaries a public audience.
Today, Baraza are still a meeting point for all sections of Zanzibar society. Every urban Baraza is lined with people gossiping, playing games of bao or cards,
drinking thick, sweet Arabic coffee or simply idling away the heat of a long afternoon with a nap on the smooth, warm stone.”
LOCATION
Baraza lies on the south eastern coast of the island of Zanzibar, along the award winning Bwejuu beach, recently voted by the prestigious
top travel magazine, Conde Nast Traveller as one of the top 30 island beaches in the world. Approximately a 50 minute drive from the
