AMBOSELI NATIONAL PARK

Amboseli National Park at the foot of Africa's highest mountain, 5895m Kilimanjaro, is one of the most popular of Kenya's national parks. The snow-capped peak of Mt Kilimanjaro rising above a saucer of clouds dominates every aspect of Amboseli. The park covers only 392 square kilometers and supports a wide range of mammals (over 50 species) and birds (over 400 species). This is also the home of the Maasai people - tall, proud nomads whose legendary prowess in battle and single-handed acts has spread across the globe. They live harmoniously with the wildlife. The park is composed of a seasonal lake, swamps and springs fed by underground rivers from Kilimanjaro's melting snow. The snows of the Kilimanjaro white and crystalline, form a majestic backdrop to one of Kenya's most spectacular displays of wildlife - over thousands of elephants, leopard, giraffe, cheetah, buffalo and host of plains' game. 250 kms from Nairobi.

Paradise Camp

The lodge is located in Amboseli and derives its name from the "umbrella tree" - Acacia Tortilis.

Tortilis is a luxurious tented camp set in the sloping hills of Ilmbireshari and facing out over unrivalled views of Africa's most spectacular mountain, Kilimanjaro. The camp offers guests a chance to experience the real Africa, sleeping under canvas and waking up to spectacular views. The lodge has a unique setting which provides double advantage of ready access to the herds of game which live outside the park as well as game drives within the park itself.

The accommodation is designed with each tent being extra large, a semi-circular verandah, allowing guests breathtaking views from the privacy of their own tents. The service is very personalised. Tortilis Camp has won the British Airways Regional Award for Ecotourism and has been awarded a place on the Conde Nast Travellers 2005 Gold list. The camp has earned itself an international reputation for its commitment to the environment with its rustic simplicity, unobtrusive design and attention to comfort without compromising the ecosystem.
